Warring Parties

by David Michael
From the Crocodile and the Chihuahua

The story behind the song

This song diverges stylistically from most of the more personal themes on this CD. I awoke in a cold sweat after a particularly poignant nightmare and scrawled some of the lines, which then got worked into the lyrics of the song. The flavor of the dream seemed to be reminiscent of the literature and music I consumed in the 60's, so I asked Joe Breskin to do this one electric with me - a return to the kind of music I was into some 40 years ago! (Yup, I'm pretty old!)

The lyrics

The dance goes on 'til 5 AM
The monster and his bride
The warring parties toast
The very thing they ought to hide

The mind police are hard at work
Their forces never rest
Their weapons only work on those
Already dispossessed

The news is tame and sanitized
To spread their sterile seed
The bludgings of the industry
Finds fertile ground in me

They tear the fruit from off the earth
The trimmings for the feast
Invited are the toil-less ones
The beauty and the beast

And now they've got you in their sights
And try to match your moves
The party's really heating up
The puppet really grooves

The pitch and toss of love and loss
The killers' lonely game
They're changing places with their foes
The world goes on the same.
