The story behind the song

Yes, you don't have to count! There really are 34 questions in this sardonic romp, ironically written on Valentines Day 2002 after a gloriously failed attempt at conducting a cross-continental love affair. In a desperate attempt to extract every ounce of humor from a very fresh disaster, I was also able to sufficiently answer the questions in my own mind to move on and march merrily back into the fray.

The lyrics

Were you a match for me in another age?
Could we have met in days of yore?
Where did you spring from with those green eyes?
And is this the same old game we played before?
Will you jump my body when you're steamy?
Will you stump my spirit when you're dry?
Will you thump me on the nose and think it dreamy?
I'd like to paint your beauty on the fly!

Were you the orphan of a loveless night?
Were you the victim of a sage?
Do you really want to struggle for your loving?
Do you want me as a vessel for your rage?
Are you sweet beneath your cloak and dagger?
Could you treat my shadow side with care?
Will you greet my sense of balance when you stagger?
I challenge you to meet me in the air!

What are those false hopes that you warn me of?
Though you insist you will not tell...
Do you want my folded hand laid on the table?
Do you want to stuff my passion in your well?
Do you spar with me to feed your fire?
Do you tar and feather me for fun?
Will you harm my fading trust with your desire?
I'm sending you my blessings on the run!

When I'm no longer game, will you be waiting then?
Will you bear down like wind and time?
Do you expect to get a medal for infractions?
Do you really see my action as a crime?
Do you know, I'm really not the enemy?
Can you show me that you really care?
Will it flow, and can there be a remedy?
Surrendering to one who's just not there!

Where can I go now, when my hope is gone?
Will you encourage something new?
Is it appropriate to grease your lightning?
When I see the kind of pain you're going through...
Will I lay my head upon your alter?
Will I pray your blade won't run me through?
Could I stay with you and never falter?
I think it's more than twice what I can do!
