AFTER THE RAIN
Multi-instrumentalist and master of the Celtic harp, David Michael has been playing stringed instruments for 55 years. Here he blends the haunting voice of viola-da-gamba (predecessor of the cello) and piano with his gentle and expressive harp playing to create a suite of trios, duets and solos for these three instruments. David is well known for his solo harp recordings and over 20 multi-track studio albums, but this is his first foray into performing every part himself on a multi-track CD.
After the Rain is introspective, exploratory and impressionistic. It contains concise compositions yet employs elements of improvisation - a hallmark of David's production style and one of his techniques for keeping the performances sounding fresh and inspired.
Living as he does in a home that also houses a school for massage - run by his wife Dari - David has ample opportunities to provide music for the healing arts and he composed this suite of gentle pieces with that in mind. The simple music is slow and suitable for massage or meditation, yet is born of sophisticated understanding of classical forms. The arrangements are intended to satisfy the ear in any kind of contemplative setting.
David has a passion for World Fusion music and believes any combination of instruments can work together if musicians engage in deep listening and seek common ground. Not surprisingly, his viola-da-gamba playing in After the Rain is instructed more by the music of India than by traditional Renaissance or early Baroque music. He has collaborated for years with Benjy Wertheimer, a master of North Indian classical music and the esraj, a 19-stringed bowed instrument. When David plays viola-da-gamba, the influences from the esraj are unmistakable.
