The story behind the song

A 'realistic' love song. When I mentioned to old buddy Matthew Mortfort that I was in a nice new relationship, he chortled, 'Don't worry, David. There's still plenty of time for the relationship to fail.' I repeated this line to my sweetie at the time, Rebecca Solomon, during an intimate moment and she thought it was one of the funniest things she'd ever heard. A natural comedian, she decided I just had to write the song. I had great fun with this. Rebecca helped me figure out a few of the lines, as did friends Michael Mandrel and Charlie Rafferty.

The lyrics

color black = his part
color red = her part
green = the duet

There's still plenty of time for our love affair to die
With the odds so stacked against us, should we even risk a try?
We might ruin a perfect friendship without ever asking why
There's still plenty of time for our love affair to die

Nowhere on earth is it written that we
Can achieve staying powers from the urge to be free
We might wind up consenting
In secret resenting

The chains that we merrily
Wrap 'round each others' necks

CHORUS:
There's still plenty of time for our love not to work
You just might be psychotic.
You just might be a jerk
Maybe I'll need Viagra.
Maybe I'll go berserk
Am I bound to find out you have some fatal quirk?

There's still oodles of time for our ship to go down
I could play the tragic hero.

You could leave me here to drown
You might leave me on some island, then go sailing far away

And start living with some harem while you cry away the day

(CHORUS)

Yes, there's every possibility our love thing won't work out
Hell, they never have before and now we're old and way burned out
We could always still blow it
It's true, don't you know it?
We might have to quit
If we can't resolve it

I could find out you're passive aggressive
You could turn out to be too possessive
You could be immature
You could be way too sure
It could be awfully stressful
To be unsuccessful

(CHORUS)

There's a billion bloody reasons why we're destined to fail
I'll shove you off your pedestal.

I'll run you off your rail
We might still be in love now...even think it will last

And forget all the while, those things in our past

FINAL CHORUS:
There's still plenty of time for our love not to work
You just might be psychotic. You just might be a jerk
But we're hopeful romantics 'til the day that we die
So let's give our new romance that ol' college try
