The story behind the song

This is one of those songs born of catharsis. I sat down with pen in hand in a state of severe, morose agony over a passionate love affair gone very wrong, and allowed the unburdening to unfold in one mighty gush. Whew…sure beats months of therapy! Judging from the reactions, there are many folks (mostly middle-aged) who really relate to the sardonic, dark humor of it all. Nothing a little trip to Mexico couldn't cure ... which leads us to the title cut (see description for the next song).

The lyrics

She got a once-ish notion
To give my whole body a squeeze
She followed me back to Port Townsend
And soon I was down on my knees
Then she flew to her nest
And she gave me a test
To find out just how far she could go
Now they're sweeping debris
From the mess that was me
The results of the test still don't show

She gave me all of the answers
To questions that I never asked
No matter how tender I touched her
I still could not see her unmasked
She asked me to stay
But she just wouldn't play
When I tried to undress all her fears
So I took a new tact
To address my own act
And extracted my heart from those spears

I wrote a daunting email
To urge her to leave me alone
She reached in a big bag of weapons
And fired a few rounds through the phone
On the eve of release
When I'd written my piece
Trying to budge an unmovable stone
Then the guards all relaxed
As the killer moon waxed
And the slugs found their way to my bone

She gave me my marching orders
After tying a string to my heart
I'm a yo-yo of epic proportions
My gyrations are way off the chart
It's a shame to be near
Such a fountain of fear
When you're trying to get up off the ground
If I do what she say
And I learn to obey
She'll reward me by hanging around

So it's off to the jungle I go now
To try on a new set of aims
Those rose colored glasses in pieces
The castles I built all in flames
I'll be flying all night
In the waning moonlight
Where it's safe to surrender my shame
If I make it back soon
I will sing a new tune
That there's nothing and no one to blame
