The story behind the song

Returning to the wonderful guitar tuning used on Stumbling Mantras that Joe Breskin showed me, this seems like a fitting closing number. It's about coaxing a lover to relax, let go, and 'have some fun'. Around my 50th birthday, I decided to adopt this motto: If it's not (1) really fun, (2) really rewarding or (3) absolutely necessary, I ain't doing it no more! This has served me well and has led to far more joy in my life.

The Lyrics

Won't you let your hair down
Let yourself go really free
Pick a sweet red raspberry for me

Such a simple thing
Unlocks your beauty sevenfold
Won't you let your hair down
Just be bold

Build a quiet freeway
To the essence of my soul
Won't you let your hair down
Wheels will roll

Float a lacey river
Where the weeping willows flow
Won't you let your hair down
Let me row

Join a mystic circus
Riding bareback through the ring
Won't you let your hair down
You can sing

Set my loins on fire
Underneath your velvet spread
Won't you let your hair down
In my bed

Spin your web around me
While the world goes whistling past
Won't you let your hair down
Hold me fast

Spurt your joyous laughter
Spread your wings to meet the sun
Won't you let your hair down
Have some fun!
