|DAVID MICHAEL & RANDY MEAD|
David Michael and Randy Mead met in 1973 and began a musical relationship that has spanned 35 years and a wide variety of creative explorations.
Composers, arrangers, producers and international performers, they have recorded for various labels such as Nippon Phonogram (Japan) and Narada. They have released nine CDs as a duo on David's own Purnima label (see catalog of recordings) which he operates in Port Townsend WA. Randy is also an engineer with his own recording studio in Colville WA where much of their music has been recorded.
They are both proficient on a plethora of instruments. David plays an array of unusual stringed instruments such as Celtic harp, zithers, psalteries, guitars, bouzouki and viola-da-gamba. Randy is a classically trained flutist with skills on sax, clarinet, ethnic wind instruments, electronic instruments and piano. He also plays a variety of instruments he invented that utilize ancient tuning systems.
The duo has pioneered World Fusion music, combining ideas from many cultures. They have played in numerous eclectic ensembles in the Seattle and San Francisco Bay Area through the decades, teamed up with dance troupes and have collaborated with members of major symphonies and ethnic music masters from many countries. They have also toured extensively in Europe and the Western United States.
Randy spent years playing in the World-Fusion group Ancient Future. David is well known for his impromptu harp concerts aboard Washington State Ferries...playing to over 50,000 people a year for over 17 years. Despite distances, the duo has managed to maintain regular collaborations.
The Michael & Mead duo has been interviewed and featured repeatedly on PRI's 'Echoes' program, NPR, cable and network television and videos internationally. In addition, they specialize in creating custom soundtracks for various media. In 2007 they released an hour-long art film in conjunction with Noblet Productions, called Four Seasons of Western Washington, which blends images of their actual musical performance with Noblet's spectacular nature footage.
Later in 2007, Randy and his wife Hope created a feature-length documentary film ORBS: THE VEIL IS LIFTING about consciousness and the soundtrack comprises musical highlights of David and Randy's illustrious partnership. The underlying music from the film is now available as a soundtrack CD called Hidden Worlds.
